Joseph Levitt Obituary

It is with great sadness that his family shares the sudden passing of Joseph P. Levitt on November 26, 2021. A resident of Chichester NH, Joe was returning from his first hunting trip of the season, when he was involved in a tragic car accident on an icy road in New Hampshire. He would have been 39 years old on December 11. He was born in Framingham MA to Patricia Welch Levitt and Morris R. Levitt. Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Leah Santangelo, his brothers Jonathan Levitt (Amy Kohn) and David Levitt (Donna Simon), his sister Meagan Levitt (Arthur Hernandez) and his beloved cousins Maggie Reagan (Jason), Andrew Ross, Adrianna Ross, and Nickolas Ross. Additionally, Joe is survived by his aunts and uncles Charlotte and Henry Lapidus, Jane Welch, Kathy and Kelly Salmon, Mary Welch-Donovan as well as his in-laws, Charles and JoAgnes Santangelo, and loving cousins and nieces.

Joe graduated from Governor’s Academy in Byfield, MA. His wanderlust took him to Tulane University where he officially majored in geology and unofficially in NOLA culture. He received a B.S. in Geology and Environmental Geoscience (cum laude) from Tulane University, and studied at the University of Accra, Ghana. Joe earned a Master’s degree in science education from Montana State University. His thesis was based on an outdoor lab he designed at Governor’s Academy.

Recently Joe launched his own online business. He had worked as a water scientist for the U.S. Geological Survey in Pembroke NH, and was proud of his scientific work. Prior to that, he worked for years for Clean Harbors; he cleaned up oil spills in waterways, including the San Francisco Bay and the Mississippi River in New Orleans. He was once dispatched to Iowa on the shores of the flooded Mississippi River to corral 35,000 drowned pigs, using oil spill boom technology. He also taught Math and Chemistry at Fryeburg Academy in Fryeburg ME.

Joe will be remembered by his family for his love of the outdoors, for his ability to make everyone laugh, and for his love and care of family members. Joe’s fully decorated Christmas tree tattoo will also be remembered as a symbol of his Santa-like persona, giving nature, and love and acceptance of all those lucky enough to share in his life.

Joe Levitt was himself a force of the nature that he both studied, worked, and played in.
